Rajat Nigam has seen it all in the media industry, albeit from the annexes and the technology perspective. An industry veteran with over 24 years, he has helmed varied responsibilities, ranging from enabling international sports productions (Olympics, Asian Games, ODI cricket) to intensive news broadcasting, budgeting for satellite communication links, setting up of FM radio stations and rolling out digital media products.
He has also contributed in adoption of many firsts in the Indian industry like H.264 compression for broadcast channel transmission, IP newsrooms, native HD channel set-up and use of cloud for news-gathering and productions.
As Group CTO of Network18, one of his highlights last year was stitching 20 TV news channels into a single technological fabric, facilitating better content exchange. Its immediate impact was that TV and digital media consumers simultaneously got accurate results of Assembly elections; that too much before other platforms could play catch up! Defining workflows for the management and distribution of content of entertainment genre on digital platforms (OTT) was another notable contribution.
Nigam was also part of the core team that re-launched CNN-News18 English news channel, and unveiled its new studio with enhanced presentation value and tech-essence. Rolling out a mobile app of the MoneyControl portal, besides various digital products of the network (namely FirstPost, Pradesh18, Overdrive, Forbes, etc) and structuring of News18 app and website by integrating TV and digital newsrooms with productive workflows and practices, are other mentionable focal points.
In 2016, Nigam was conferred with first SCTE award (India) for his contribution towards Digital India initiatives and was included amongst the influential tech leaders in various industries by Centre of Recognition & Excellence (CORE) in the CIO Power List of 2016. Continuing to reinforce Network18’s technology foundation for business efficiency, he is now engrossed in testing and evaluating nuances on 4K content and 4G environment – touted as the next big wave!
