Just as Ki & Ka showcases an unusual marriage between a house-husband and a career woman, R Balki’s cinema too is a happy marriage between modern sensibilities and song-filled narrative. His earlier films like Cheeni Kum and Paa became talking points because of their thematic daring and he once again birthed a conversation starter with Ki & Ka. The film showcased an ambitious Kareena Kapoor marrying a laidback Arjun Kapoor whose ambitions were restricted to cooking up a storm in the kitchen.
This shattering of stereotypes is the basis of a thought-provoking, gender-busting film. The film also benefited from Balki’s ability to line the tale with attention-grabbing star cameos as he got Amitabh and Bachchan to make winning appearances as themselves.
True to character, he subverted expectations and created two warm, central characters who engage you with their fortes and their failings. If you get the subliminal message, it is the icing on the wedding cake.
