Bajirao Mastani begins with a disclaimer that the story has been dramatised for the big screen. But nothing prepares viewers for the majestic cinematic experience based on life of Peshwa Bajirao, his romance with Mastani, and this spillover of this relationship with this wife, Kashibai.

One reason these mesmerising images stay with you even after you have left the theatres is the special effects that Prasad Sutar meticulously stitched into the movie. Remember the battle of Bundelkhand where Bajirao decimates the enemy forces? Or when he weathers an inclement climate for his tryst with the waiting Mastani? Each of these terrific VFX specials were crafted by Sutar’s team to match the grandeur Sanjay Leela Bhansali envisaged for his magnum opus.

The computer wizardry Sutar effected in the movie, whether it was creating the opulent Shanivarwada or Ranbir swinging his flexi-sword to deflect the array of arrows shot at him by his enemies, won him the Best Visual Effects award for Bajirao Mastani at the Zee Cine Awards 2016.

Talking about his work, Sutar said, “Almost every scene had a VFX component and each sequence demanded an essence of history, romance and culture. So, right from designing the sequences, creating the backgrounds, extending the sets, executing the battle sequences, multiplication of the crowd, and setting the climax to take the story to its conclusion, the team went on to create the visuals to suit the era of history and traditional relevance of culture.”
