Sony Pictures Networks (SPN) got into the OTT game fairly early – 2013 to be precise – with SonyLIV; and has managed to hold its own in the mushrooming OTT space. It recorded 22.5 million downloads till May 2016. Most of this traction came from the sports genre. SPN has a robust sporting bouquet – from cricket, soccer, basketball, wrestling to tennis – that it live-streams on its digital platform too.
For instance, SonyLIV is the official mobile and internet broadcaster of UEFA Euro 2016 and will live stream the matches exclusively in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Afghanistan and Maldives (non-exclusive). “Users deprived of watching the matches on TV or live streaming can keep up with the tournament because of the minute-by-minute text commentary of every match,” said Uday Sodhi, adding that SonyLIV will continue to leverage this genre depending on sports rights acquired through the year.
Drama, comedy and movies are other genres grabbing eyeballs on SonyLIV. A music section was also launched, and Sodhi revealed that the brand was looking at the kids segment for better monetisation options.
