After almost a year-long preparation, Doordarshan, the national public service broadcaster, put together a great show at the 35th National Games held in seven districts of Kerala. The biennial event, held from January 31 to February 14, had an expansive coverage including live telecasts, highlights, and news-based programs.The broadcaster deployed eight OB vans and ten DSNGs in total besides a number of ENG camera units for the successful and wide coverage of this mega event. Two HD vans were dedicated for the opening ceremony which demanded as many as 18 camera angles to capture the gaiety of the event. For this, OB vans of Doordarshan Kendras Mumbai and Chennai were integrated together.Most of the popular games such as athletics, aquatics, football, basketbal, kabaddi, tennis, gymnastics, handball, badminton and boxing were telecast live. To broadcast all the events in succession and alternatively, a grand-stand studio set up was made at Doordarshan Kendra Thiruvananthapuram. This involved set-ting up a feed room with almost a dozen IRDs along with 64 X 64 router with 1+1 redundancy. The signals from all the venues were routed to both the studios handling DD Sports and DD Malayalam transmissions using multi-viewers. “This enabled simultaneous production for two different channels with commentary in appropriate language. The entire DD Sports transmission was also shifted to Doordarshan Kendra, Thiruvananthapuram for this period,” said N. Thiyagarajan, additional director general (E), AIR & DD maintenance, south zone. Besides this, a complete suite of recording facility was also set up for independent recording of sports activities from each and every venue by deploying dedicated machines. This facility was also augment-ed with video servers. Three of the video servers deployed were developed in house using open-source architecture.One of the most notable technical activities, besides the excellent coverage of the games was the computer graphics provided by Doordarshan.The entire suite of software along with templates was designed and developed in house on high-end workstations. The Doordarshan team also integrated this graphics with the clock providers of the game so that precise clock time could be displayed on screen for swimming other events. The 35th edition of the National Games witnessed more than a total of 9,515 participants, among them 7,464 are athletes and 2,051 of them are non-playing participants such as coaches, team managers and other supporting officials. Overall, it was a show that delivered on its promise.
